Install Safe Cycling Lanes on High Street

High Street is Ambridge's busiest commuter route and the main artery connecting Central Ward and North Ward to the town centre. Despite carrying hundreds of cyclists daily, it has no dedicated cycling infrastructure whatsoever. Cyclists are forced to share lanes with fast-moving traffic, navigate around parked delivery vehicles, and make judgment calls at junctions that were never designed with cycling in mind.

The consequences are predictable. Near-misses are reported weekly on local community forums. Several cycling incidents have occurred at the junction of High Street and Market Road in the past 12 months alone. Many residents who would like to cycle to work or to school do not feel safe doing so and are instead adding to the congestion and carbon emissions they would otherwise be reducing.

We are calling on the Highways & Transport Committee to take meaningful action to make High Street safe for cyclists, in line with the council's own active travel commitments.

High Street currently has no segregated cycling provision. The road carries an average of 8,400 vehicles per day, with peak volumes during morning and evening commuter periods. Cycling counts conducted by the Ambridge Cycling Campaign in 2025 recorded an average of 340 cyclists per day on the High Street corridor, all sharing the carriageway with motor vehicles. The council's adopted Local Transport Plan includes a commitment to delivering safe cycling routes on all key commuter corridors by 2028, yet no design work has commenced on High Street.
