The Ambridge Council is the principal governing and decision-making body of the Ambridge District, comprising all 188 elected councillors drawn from wards across the district. As the full council, it represents the highest tier of democratic authority within Ambridge’s local government structure, and it is here that the most significant decisions affecting the lives of residents are debated, scrutinised, and formally resolved.

The Council meets regularly throughout the municipal year to consider and approve matters of strategic importance, including the setting of the annual budget, the adoption of major policies, and the determination of issues that fall outside the delegated authority of individual committees. It is also the body responsible for electing the Leader of the Council, appointing members to committees and outside bodies, and holding the executive to account on behalf of the communities it serves.

Chaired by Mark Dixon, the Ambridge Council operates within a framework of openness, accountability, and public participation. All full council meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to engage with the democratic process — whether by attending meetings, submitting questions, or participating in the formal public speaking provisions available through the council’s procedures.

As an Executive-type committee operating under the 2024 municipal year, the Ambridge Council functions with a quorum of 63 members, ensuring that decisions made at full council level carry the weight and legitimacy that the district’s residents expect and deserve. Each councillor, regardless of party affiliation or ward, carries an equal vote and an equal responsibility to represent the interests of their constituents in the chamber.
