About this Petition

Ambridge's parks and green spaces are some of the most valued assets in our community. They are where children take their first steps, where families gather on weekends, and where local residents of all ages come to unwind and connect with one another. But for too many parents and caregivers, a trip to the local playground has become a source of anxiety rather than enjoyment — because the equipment their children are expected to play on is old, visibly deteriorating, and in some cases, genuinely dangerous.

The playground facilities across Ambridge's neighbourhoods and communities have not kept pace with the needs of a growing population. Worn-out structures, rusted fittings, broken surfaces, and outdated designs are a common sight, and the risk of injury to children using this equipment is real and increasing. Parents have raised these concerns repeatedly, and yet the playgrounds remain in a state that falls well short of what any child deserves.

This is about more than just aesthetics. Safe, well-maintained playgrounds are essential for children's physical development, mental wellbeing, and social growth. They give children a space to be active, to build friendships, and to develop confidence — but only if the equipment is fit for purpose. When it is not, children are either placed at risk or discouraged from using the spaces at all, which has its own consequences for their health and development.

Adults and elderly residents who make use of park facilities are equally affected. Deteriorating infrastructure does not only pose a risk to children — it sends a wider message that the council does not value the spaces where ordinary residents spend their leisure time. Ambridge's communities deserve better, and this petition is the voice of every parent, grandparent, and resident who has looked at their local playground and known that something must change.

We are calling on the Parks & Recreation Improvement Taskforce to take immediate action to revamp playground facilities across all affected neighbourhoods, so that every child in Ambridge has access to a safe, modern, and enjoyable play environment.

Background Information

Playground equipment across several of Ambridge's parks and community spaces has deteriorated significantly and is no longer safe for use. Residents have raised ongoing concerns about the condition of these facilities, citing visible wear, structural damage, and safety hazards that pose a risk to children and other users. The current state of the equipment is not only inadequate — it is evidently unsafe, and continued inaction increases the likelihood of serious injury.

Action Requested

We call on the Parks & Recreation Improvement Taskforce to conduct an urgent safety assessment of all playground equipment across Ambridge's parks and community spaces, and to allocate dedicated funding for the full replacement and modernisation of any facilities found to be unsafe or beyond reasonable repair. We further request that a clear maintenance schedule be established going forward to prevent this level of deterioration from recurring.
